.... Ferdinand ran to the middle of the ring and everyone shouted and clapped because they thought he was going to fight fiercely and butt and snort and stick his horns around.

But not Ferdinand. When he got to the middle of the ring he saw the flowers in the all the lovely ladies' hair and he just sat down quietly and smelled.

He wouldn't fight and be fierce no matter what they did. He just sat and smelled. And the Banerillos were angry and the Picadores were angrier and the Matador was so angry he cried because he couldn't show off with his cape and sword.

So they had to take Ferdinand home. And for all I know he is sitting there still, under his favourite cork tree, smelling the flowers just quietly.

He is very happy.

I saw these guys in 1991 in Canada in my university's pub, where they were selling a self produced tape, the same on both sides with a photocopied yellow liner. In the 1994 I saw them at Break for the Border in London, where the audience was mainly ex-pat Canadians. In 1995 I saw them at the Hammersmith Apollo, to a huge crowd. Every time they do this song, it's different.

An imploded house on Prince Edward Island. The house, complete with furniture, had fallen into its own basement, yet had a dissolute beauty. The stunning view over the Northumberland Strait probably helped with that.

Cows and Pheasant

The cottage always has extras for unexpected arrivals. Everyone should swim, so all bathing suits are pressed into use, no matter the age. This suit is from the 1940s. Basic black wool, but surprisingly comfortable and not itchy at all.

Ghost Cows

A soft and foggy day, warm and dark. The neighbour's cattle are slowly grazing on the hill in their field, picking their way across the sward. A good day to be walking alone; quiet and contemplative. Others' cattle encourage contemplation.

Flying

A glorious day for sailing, sun, wind, and speed. The sails are translucent, bringing the sun even to the shadows. The speed feels like we're flying, so imagine what it must feel like on the other boat - the one that's winning.

Hurricane

Early fall is our hurricane season. We seldom get the full blast (the one in 1999 decimated Halifax's park's trees), but often get a good, big, warm blow. The seas run high and fast, and the clouds race across the sky.
